Visiting the U.S.

An Irish citizen does not need a visa to visit the U.S. if

• he or she plans to stay only for a brief visit of up to 90 days, and

• the purposes of the visit is business, tourism, visiting or pleasure.

In such a case, he or she may travel on the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). A person traveling on VWP may not work, study, or remain in the U.S. past 90 days. For more information on VWP or other non-immigrant visa options visit the Department of State website.  

Remember that you may not enter the U.S. on VWP with the intention of remaining in the U.S. longer than 90 days and/or to work, study, or marry. Visiting Ireland

U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Ireland for a brief visit of up to 90 days. However, when entering the country, they must still be in possession of

• a valid passport

• round trip ticket

• evidence of sufficient funds of support for duration of stay (e.g. statement of earnings, bank statement, credit cards, ATM cards, traveler’s checks)

Additionally an immigration officer has the right to request any other information he/she deems necessary in connection with entry. The final decision on right of entry rests with the immigration officer at the port of entry. Upon satisfactory inspection, a person receives a stamp in his or her passport authorizing a stay of up to 90 days. A visitor cannot study or work in Ireland with this stamp.
